CEO, JOSCO Products

1. What is the most important skill you utilize often in your career?

Interpersonal communications. My business relies on sales; so, keeping buyers and suppliers informed, interested in doing business with me, and pleased is important. Interpersonal communications are key to that. It is also important internally at JOSCO with my team. To make sure they know how they are aligning with goals and needs.

2. Before working at JOSCO Products, what was the most unusual or interesting job you had?

AstroWorld groundskeeper. I was in high school, covered AstroWorld on roller skates, and picked up trash.

3. If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would you say to her?

Go get a job outside of the family business to gain valuable experience, success or failure, which could be brought back to the family business. I’d also tell myself to have more confidence in my abilities.

4. Are you a morning or a night person, and what do you typically do at that time of day?

More morning than night. I get up around 6 a.m. and check in with my team at JOSCO. Our production team starts at 5 a.m. Then, I take a walk while listening to an audiobook. That sends me to work ready for the day.

5. Do you have a hobby or pastime that you couldn’t live without?

Taking a walk in the morning while listening to an audiobook. I listen to a wide range of books, books for entertainment, theology, personal development, or business strategy.

6. What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately and why did you like it so much?

The Peanut Butter Falcon. You really have to see it to get it. To its credit, it won a SXSW Film Award. It’s about a man named Zak in his early 20s with Downs Syndrome who eventually escapes the nursing home he is in. He’s obsessed with pro wrestling, and he meets up with a shady but somewhat good guy. They go on a Huck Finn-style adventure trying to get Zak to a wrestler and coach he idolizes. A note about production, Zak is played by Zach Gottsagen who has Downs. He got the role when a film crew visited his community, and he told them he wanted to be in a movie.
